Albert Smethurst WEST was born in 1896 in Geelong, Victoria

His parents were Albert  Edward WEST and Alice Cecelia Maud SMETHURST

He enlisted on 28th May 1917 with the Australian Army -17th Battalion, 20th Reinforcements - Unit left Sydney on HMAT Beltana on 16th June 1917 - Rank Private - later he was commissioned as a Lieutenant

Albert had previous service with the Senior Cadets (4 years), Citizens Forces (2 years) 33rd Infantry,  Irish Rifles Commission , June 1913 . Mobilized AIF Camps in NSW (18 months)

He died of wounds on 17th July, 1918 in France and is buried in Crouy British cemetery, France - he was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal
